CHRIS BARBER MBE FRGS
Chris Barber is a well known author in Wales with thirty books published to date. He has spent all his life in the Newport and Abergavenny areas and in 1994 he took early retirement from his post as Chief Countryside Warden with Gwent County Council. He is now working full time as a writer, publisher, photographer and lecturer.
As a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society he is much travelled and is also well known for his skills as a photographer with many of his pictures published in books and periodicals. He is also an enthusiastic and experienced walker, montaineer and caver and has spent a lifetime exploring, photographing and writing about a wide range of interesting places, with a particular emphasis on Wales.
Living at Llanfoist, below the Blorenge mountain, near Abergavenny he has taken a particular interest in the industrial history of the area and his book ‘Cordell Country’, published in 1985 was written as a tribute to the writer Aexander Cordell. It related to the historic sites featured in Cordell’s famous novel ‘Rape of the Fair Country’ and provided an insight into the industrial past of such places as Blaenafon, Garnddyrys and Nantyglo.
Chris is not only a writer and a photographer, but a publisher as well and his publishing house Blorenge Books is a small concern but produces books of high quality relating to Wales.
As a walker, climber and caver, Chris has an intimate knowledge of the Brecon Beacons National Park which has been gained over many years.
He was the originator of the popular Three Peaks Trial and for many years organiser of the annual South Wales Seven Peaks 47 mile Marathon Walk. His interests are wide ranging as the titles of his many publications indicate, for they cover industrial archaeology, prehistoric standing stones and the mysteries and legends of Wales, while his skills as a photographer are widely acknowledged. He also lectures regularly throughout the area on various aspects of his experiences as an author, photographer and historian.
His book entitled ‘In Search of Owain Glyndwr’ was intensively researched over a period of ten years and published in March 1998. It is the first richly illustrated book to be published on this subject. A new edition of the book in full colour was published in June 2004.
Chris made a major break through with his book ‘Journey to Avalon’ which was written jointly with David Pykitt and originally published by Blorenge Books in 1993 and sold widely, particularly throughout Wales. In 1998 he sold the World rights on this book to the American publisher, Samuel Weiser . It has since been published both in Italian and Polish.
A follow up to this book entitled ‘The Legacy of King Arthur’ and the result of 20 years research by Chris Barber and David Pykitt was published in 2004
When the area around Blaenavon was declared a World Heritage Site in 2000, Chris took immediate action and began writing the definitive guidebook. It was published in 2002 and this beautifully illustrated book has proved very successful and extremely helpful for visitors to gain an intimate understanding of the importance of this fascinating area. In 2003 Chris Barber received an ‘Award for Excellence’ for this book from the Outdoor Writers’ Guild.
Between working on these various projects Chris still finds time to be Secretary of the Llanfoist Local History Society and a Committee Member of the Brecon Beacons Park Society. But his greatest passion is to roam through Wales with his camera whenever possible, capturing the beauty of the counytryside through the seasons.
Chris Barber’s many interests and achievements have been recognised by an entry in ‘Who’s Who in the World’ and he is a member of the Outdoor Writers and Photographers’ Guild. He was awarded the MBE for ‘Services to the Community and Tourism” in the 2008 New Year’s Honours List.
